Our state-wide Wild Alaskan Salmon Campaign culminated in April with a lobbying fly-in to Washington DC.
Teen campaign leaders Aurora Hoefferle, Tracy Israelson, Maka Monture, and Chelsey Kasayulie traveled to Washington, D.C. to present 1,500 “I support Wild Alaska Salmon!” signatures to the Alaska congressional delegation. Teens asked for political support to protect wild Alaska salmon from the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, new coal mining projects, and genetic engineering.
The youth spoke clearly and passionately to Senator Begich and Murkowski about the importance of Wild Salmon as a source of subsistence, identity, and economic base for our state, and urged our leaders to place our healthy, sustainable, and economically rich fisheries above non-renewable resource extraction.
