Green Jobs

What are “Green Jobs” and why does AYEA care about them?

Green Jobs are good for both the environment AND the local economy!  AYEA is working to grow Green Jobs because Alaskan youth want good, local jobs that are good for the earth too. We’re pushing for the growth of Green Economic sectors (like renewable energy and home weatherization), and for more and better training and educational programs for young people to gain the skills and qualifications needed to work in these sectors.

How does AYEA promote Green Jobs for youth in Alaska?

Youth Employment in Parks

Youth Employment in Parks is a program that AYEA helped create (!) and continues to help run in partnership with Anchorage Parks & Recreation. It is an awesome job program for Anchorage-area youth, who get paid to spend their summer working on community improvement projects in Anchorage parks and assisting in summer recreation programs for kids. Advocating for Green Jobs in D.C.

In the fall of 2007, a group of AYEA grads traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the 2007 Powershift conference. They lobbied congress asking for Green Jobs funding as well as carbon reduction emissions and higher fuel efficiency standards. Two years later, AYEA grads were back in DC for Powershift 2009 and met with Senators Murkowski and Begich!

Dream Reborn with Green For All

In April 2008, three AYEA teens traveled to Memphis Tennessee to attend the Dream Reborn Conference. We learned about what’s going on with the national movement for Green Jobs and came home with lots of ideas for promoting local jobs in green sectors for the youth of Alaska!
