Summer Internship with AYEA through First Alaskans Institute

Alaska Youth for Environmental Action is recruiting for a summer intern to participate in the First Alaskans Institute Internship Program and intern with AYEA. There is one paid internship available, with three options to chose from for the focus of your position: Media and Communications, Civic Action Education, or Anchorage Outreach. Alaska Native/ American Indian/ rural Alaskan college students or recent graduates in good academic standing are encouraged to apply.

Wage: $15/hour

Dates: June 4 – August 10, 2012.  Includes orientation and leadership training with First Alaskans.

Duties and Responsibilities:
AYEA has multiple positions that are available. Interested applicants should choose which of the following positions they would prefer.

Option one: MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERN would maintain AYEA’s website, facebook page, and compile monthly e-newsletters to send to teens, grads, and adult supporters. The intern would gain skills in website editing, html coding, social media, press communications, and the intern would build relationships with teens, grads, and partners.

Option two: CIVIC ACTION EDUCATION INTERN would compile our existing workshops and activities into a comprehensive, organized training curriculum binder for AYEA’s annual the Civics & Conservation Summit. The final product would include facilitation resources and workshop outlines for sessions on environmental education, political education, and leadership skill building. The intern would develop skills in curriculum development, environmental educational theory and practice, and design skills.

Option three: ANCHORAGE OUTREACH INTERN would increase connections between AYEA and teens in Anchorage. Over half of the state’s teens live in this city and there are great opportunities to connect with other partner programs and reach out to teens. An intern could build relationships with partner programs, recruit teens to join AYEA, and then organize a group of teens to lead civic action and environmental education workshops for other youth. Special emphasis on targeting youth of color, especially Native youth in Anchorage.

Qualifications:
Option one: MEDIA AND COMMUNICATIONS INTERN
• Must be experienced with facebook and email
• Must have strong interest in communication technology, web editing, media and press relationships, and design
• Must have fun, engaging communication style
• Prefer experience with wordpress, facebook pages, Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop

Option two: CIVIC ACTION EDUCATION INTERN
• Must have strong interest in civic education and curriculum planning
• Must have experience with design/ layout, and have a keen eye for detail
• Prefer experience with civic engagement and political advocacy
• Prefer experience with Adobe InDesign or Mac Pages,

Option three: ANCHORAGE OUTREACH INTERN
• Must have strong public speaking skills
• Must have fun, engaging, youth-friendly communication style
• Prefer experience with education and/or community organizing
• Prefer experience with civic engagement and political advocacy

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
• Must have a strong interest in youth development, community organizing, and environmental issues.
• Excellent communication skills, including aural and written forms of communication
